Private William Columbus Campbell
Born in Stewart Co, TN, in 3 April 1822 the son of William and Mary Martha (Stone) Campbell.
Could read and write.
He married Mary Ann George, born 1822 in Bedford Co, TN, in about 1842-6 in Rutherford Co, TN; she had been previously married to Charles King. She was the daughter of Reuben and Nancy (Hodge) George. They had one child who was Mary Isabella Campbell.
He enlisted on the 23 May 1861.
Was at Lynchburg Hospital, VA, sick as per 8/61 muster roll -n he stated he was in hospital for two months due to exposure and a severe fever.
As a non conscript and overage he was discharged on the 1 August 1862, at Chattanooga, TN.
John W. Donnell stated that he brought provisions from the Federals in Murfreesboro, TN, to him during the war as he could not do anything for himself for quite some time after coming home.
He lived in Rutherford Co, TN, but also lived for9 years in Illinois.
Applied for a pension #4676 filed 29 January 1903 which was accepted.
His second wife was Melvina Jane Todd, the grave shows she was also born in 1822 and died 1904. She was the daughter of William “Colonel Billy” and Mary Jane (Douglas) Todd. They had seven children: Walker, Alice Tinnie, Edmund, Caleb, Amanda Ann, Emeline and Cynthia Campbell. Her first marriage was to Parnack George in 1839.
In 1870 they were living in Youree's Rutherford Co, TN.
He died 1904 in Beechgrove, Rutherford Co, TN, and is buried with Melvina in the Jacobs Cemetery, located in Jacobs Hallow, Rutherford, south east of Murfreesboro Co, TN, in a double grave.
He was the brother of Washington Bohanas Lafayett and Leander B. Campbell.
