States he first was in 22nd (Murray’s) Battalion Tennessee Infantry until it disbanded and he joined 16th prior to Murfreesboro (Stones River), TN.
States he contracted measles and smallpox and was not with his command after Murfreesboro.
He states he was sent home on the retreat from Tullahoma, TN.
He filed for a pension, number #16391, on the 16 December 1928 which was accepted and was living in Warren Co, TN, at the time. This was vouched for by R. G. Martin
Was born on 7 November 1844 in Van Buren Co, TN, the son of Dixon Naylor and Lydia (Logue) Hillis.
For a living he was a farmer.
He married Elizabeth “Betty” Clark on the 7 November 1866 in Warren Co, TN. She was born 23 January 1848 in Van Buren Co, TN, and died 26 November 1924 in Warren Co, TN. They had 11 children: William Buck, Ben, Nancy Lodemia, Permelia Elizabeth, Robert A., Lydia Everline, Eve Ann, James Holms, Lawson, Mary Bina and John Clark Hillis.
He died on the 3 December 1930 in Van Buren Co, TN, and is buried in the Arch Hillis Cemetery Van Buren Co, TN.
