3rd Corporal James Polk Smartt
He enlisted on the 6 October 1862 at McMinnville, TN.
Was elected 3rd Corporl on the 17 March 1863.
Served to the end and was paroled at Greensboro N.C. on the 1 May 1865.
He was wounded at battles of Murfreesboro (Stones River), TN, twice at Chickamauga and in front of Atlanta and became one of the first historians for the Chickamauga Park.
After war he moved to Nashville and then to Chattanooga where he became a respected businessman in the boot making business.
He was born 11 September 1844 in Smartts, Warren Co, TN, the son of George Madison and Ann (Waterhouse) Smartt.
He married Margaret? Rowena Kennedy on 21 January 1879. She was born in 12 October 1859 in Chattanooga, Hamilton Co, TN, and died in 4 December 1916 in Chattanooha? She was the daughter of William Eagleton Kennedy, mother unknown. They had at least three children: Myra Kennedy George Madison and John Edmundson Smartt.
He died on the 9 September 1914 in Chattanooga, TN, and is buried in the Chattanooga Citizens Cemetery, Chattanooga, Hamilton Co, TN. His wife is also buried there.
