Roysdon/Royston Robertson Etter
He was born in Warren Co, TN, 23 February 1836, the son of George H. Sr. and Harriet F. (Rowan) Etter.
Enlisted 16 September 1861 at Marlin Bottom, VA, by Col. Savage.
Severely wounded at Perryville (Chaplin Hills), KY, which his cousin J. P. Etter carried him home from. States he was shot through face, left jaw and shoulder broken.
On detached service in 7/63.
Was in hospital in Ocmulgee Hospital, Macon, GA, 24 July 1864 for diarrhea.
Transferred 26 July 1864..
Went home on retreat from Nashville, TN, barefooted with feet frozen. States he was in prison under General Stoneman at Jonesboro, GA.
Took Oath in Nashville, TN, 22 February 1865. (This is probably the Risenor Etter quoted from diary as the facts closely fit his diary entries.)
He married Sarah Ann Rutledge born 11 April 1836 and died 24 December 1917. She was the daughter of Mary Rutledge. They had ten children: Maude Manchester, Marianne Amy, John William, Lafayett Hayes, Mae/May, Samuel, Stokley James, Stokely D. Tomie/Tommy and Thomas Dow Etter.
Pension #16035. Applied for pension on 13 April 1926 living in Viola Warren Co, living with son Sam in at the time. William A. Bell, R.G. Martin and J. P. Douglas vouched for him.
He died 15 October 1927 and was buried Mount Zion Cemetery, Warren Co, TN, with his wife.
George W. Parks lists Etter as living in Texas at the time he filled out his Tennessee Civil War Veteranís Questionnaire in 1922.
