5th Sergeant Joshua D. Phillips
A Company

Born on 14 June 1837. 

He enlisted 18 May 1861. 

Won a marksman contest for one of the few Whitworth rifles sometime after the Battle of Perryville, 8 October 1862, while in Middle Tennessee. 

Promoted to 5th Sergeant on 1 January 1863. 

In August 1863 he is on duty at Lieutenant General Leonidas Polk's Headquarters. 

Served to the end being paroled at Greensboro, NC, 1 May 1865. 

He was to marry Mary Elizabeth “Mollie” Phillips on 28 November 1868 in DeKalb Co, TN. She was born 20 August 1849 died 21 June 1912 the daughter of William Carroll and Mary Ann (Carmichael) Johnson. They had two? children: possibly called Sam and Fannie Phillips.

He died on the 1 February 1911 and is buried in the Smithville City Cemetery, DeKalb Co, TN, as is his wife.
